Michigan Family Law: Friend of the Court “F.O.C.”
Michigan’s Friend of the Court (FOC) is the entity which governs custody, parenting time (visitation,) and child support. Essentially, the FOC performs the initial investigation and makes the initial recommendation for custody and support based upon the “Best Interests of the Child.” The FOC referee will also usually hear most subsequent hearings on objections to that recommendation, and on initial challenges to existing Court orders.
Each Michigan County will have its own Friend of the Court. Most of these have a website and most provide forms and information particular to that county.
